Servicing depth
A full mechanical inspection between rentals, not a wash and a fuel top up. It is the single biggest predictor of whether a cart lets you down.
Every rental company on Ambergris Caye advertises much the same thing: clean carts, good rates, friendly service. The differences only show up once something goes slightly wrong, or once you add up what the week actually cost.
So rather than a list of adjectives, here are the six things that genuinely vary between operators here, and where we sit on each one. Check them against whoever else you are considering.
Six things that actually vary
Six differences that are invisible on a booking page and obvious by day three of a rental. Ask any company about all six.
Servicing depth
A full mechanical inspection between rentals, not a wash and a fuel top up. It is the single biggest predictor of whether a cart lets you down.
Who answers at 9pm
A mechanic on call for the whole rental, reachable on a local number, with a replacement cart if yours cannot be fixed on the spot.
The real total
Delivery, collection and the bridge pass are in the rate. There is no line waiting at handover and no toll to argue about at the crossing.
Range
Gas carts that reach Secret Beach and come back on one tank, rather than a battery gauge that decides how far north you get to go.
Handover
We meet your flight or your boat. No taxi to an office, no queue, no paperwork session while the rest of the group waits outside.
Flexibility
Extensions when plans change, multi cart bookings held together, and dates that can move up to the day you travel.
The cheapest carts on the island are cheap because the maintenance is deferred. That is invisible on the morning you collect it and very visible three days later on the road north with a family aboard.
Ours go through a full inspection between every rental. Brakes, tyres, steering, lights and the engine, each checked and signed off before the next guest gets the key. Parts that are merely worn get replaced then, not when they fail.
It costs us more per rental. It is also the reason our carts are usually on the road rather than on the shoulder, and the reason repeat guests come straight back.
What the week costs
The headline daily rate is only half the picture. This is what usually gets charged separately elsewhere on the island.
| Item | With us | Often extra elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery to airstrip, dock or hotel | Included | Charged per trip |
| Collection on departure day | Included | Charged or self return |
| Bridge pass for the north crossing | Included | Paid at the toll |
| Mechanic call out during the rental | Included | Charged or unavailable |
| Replacement cart if yours fails | Included | Subject to their fleet |
The first hour on an island sets the tone for the week. Standing in a rental office with bags at your feet, filling in a form while somebody looks for a key, is a poor way to spend it.
Tell us the flight or the boat and we are there when you arrive. Keys, a quick walkthrough, and you drive off. On departure day you leave the cart where you are flying or sailing out from, and we collect it after you have gone.
Start to finish
Five stages, start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect before you commit to anything.
You send the dates
The booking form, WhatsApp or a phone call. Cart size, arrival point and how long you want it.
We confirm the cart and the total
Availability, the exact figure including any deposit terms, and where the handover happens. Usually the same day.
We meet you on arrival
Airstrip, water taxi terminal or hotel. Keys, licence check and a two minute walkthrough of the cart.
You drive the island
North for Secret Beach, south past the airstrip, town in between. If anything goes wrong you call us, day or night.
You leave it and go
Park it at your departure point with the fuel it started with. We pick it up afterwards.
Worth being straight about this before you book rather than after.
The measure we care about is not the first booking. It is how many guests come back and ask for the same cart the following year. Mark's Cart Rentals, San Pedro

Before you decide
Put these to us and to whoever else you are considering. The answers are more revealing than the daily rate.
Servicing between every rental rather than cleaning between every rental, and a mechanic on call for the whole of your booking. The rate is competitive either way, but the cart behaves differently.
It is free, and the rate is the same whether you collect from the office or we bring the cart to your hotel. Compare the daily figures against anyone else on the island and you will see it.
Tell us what you have been quoted and for which cart and dates. We would rather have the conversation than lose the booking over a figure we may be able to match.
At least The full rental cost is payable on the day of booking, and an open credit card imprint is taken on your arrival date. Both are standard on the island and both are told to you before you commit.
Usually the same day, often within the hour during island business hours. If you need an answer faster, WhatsApp or the Belize number is quicker than email.
Yes. We do this constantly for wedding parties. Give us the arrival times and we stagger the handovers so nobody is waiting around at the airstrip.
Then send us your dates. We will confirm the cart, the total and the handover point.
